About our Farm
Carson Family Farm is nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge mountains - home of the Blue Ridge Parkway and historic New River. We are a family farm, but our farm was not inherited through family. We inherited knowledge and experience, but knew we would have to go on our own to build the farm we dreamed about.
After our first son was born, looking for a farm was a mission. In 2016, we purchased the land that would become Carson Family Farm. All we had to start was a four wheeler, semen tank, pick up, a 3 legged dog, and a 9 month old baby. While we have multiple generations of experience, we have built our first generation farm from the ground up with plenty of grit, sweat, tears, and lots of work - from scratch!
The advantage of starting from scratch is that we could do it our way. The downside is that we started from scratch! All of the cattle on our farm were strategically sourced, with the original cows on our farm originating from longtime friends retiring from farming. Our registered cattle herd grew by looking at other registered breeders from across the country, and by utilizing Artificial Insemination and Embryo Transfer to increase genetic quality.
While we were growing our cattle herd, a primary concern was to focus on environmentally friendly farming practices. We were fortunate that most creeks and streams were already fenced out with alternate water sources for livestock. This reduced point source pollution by animal waste in waterways. As our herd grew over the years, we implemented regenerative grazing practices including rotational grazing, utilizing perennial forages, and unrolling hay bales for winter grazing. These practices increased forage production, while decreasing fertilizer use. Unintended advantages to regenerative grazing included an increase of pollinator species on the farm, especially Monarch butterflies!
We believe in being active in our community, and leadership in agricultural groups. Callie is very active in the NC Angus Association having served on many committees, as association Vice-President (2021-2022), and association President (2023-2024). She is also active with the American Angus Association participating in the Beef Leaders Institute (2024) and serving as a Voting Delegate (2022-2025).
